Who we are

We are dedicated to empowering individuals to exercise their rights as citizens, actively participate in their communities, and foster meaningful relationships. Our mission is to strengthen natural support systems, including families, while enabling people to make informed choices and take control of their personal affairs. We work to assist individuals in achieving positive, desirable futures, while promoting dignity, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone we serve.

The Dickson County Adult Activity began in 1974, initiated by parents and concerned citizens. Initially serving 18 adults with intellectual disabilities in the old Jackson Clinic building, it later managed a group home in White Bluff and relocated to the old Sylvia schoolhouse. In 1979, a group home for women opened in Dickson, followed by the establishment of early intervention services and the adoption of the name "Developmental Services of Dickson County" in 1981. Throughout the years, the agency expanded its services, including the management of DS Industries and Budget Store, the opening of new group homes, the expansion of the Foundations Preschool Program, the initiation of services in Houston County, and the provision of Medicaid-funded services. Supported living services, family support services, and child care resource and referral programs were also introduced. Today, Developmental Services supports over 300 individuals and employs over 280 staff members across eight counties, with an annual budget exceeding $9.0 million.
