The Arc Offers Activities for Local Families

July 07, 2013/Dickson – Developmental Services of Dickson County, an affiliated chapter of The Arc, has a number of activities scheduled for area families of individuals with a disability.  Registration is open for Next Chapter Book Clubs, Parent Groups, and two STEP Training Workshops.

Next Chapter Book Clubs involve adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities reading and learning, making friends, and enjoying a fun community gathering place.  Members meet weekly for one hour to read and discuss a book of their choosing.  Anyone can participate, no matter their reading or ability level. Members improve literacy skills, make friends, take part in the community, and have a lot of fun doing it!

The Arc is looking to start monthly parent groups, offering families a time and place to gather and discuss the joys and challenges of caring for children with a disability.  Time spent together will allow family members an opportunity to seek information and to share successful strategies, with occasional guest speakers and facilitators.

Support and Training for Exceptional Parents (STEP), a federally funded program that provides information, training, and support to parents of children with disabilities, will hold two Parent Training Workshops in Dickson hosted by The Arc.  In August, the STEP workshop will be BASIC Rights:  A Parent’s Introduction to Special Education.  In September, the STEP training will be IEP (Individualized Education Plan) Workshop.

The Arc is a grassroots, nationwide non-profit organization that works to improve the lives of people with intellectual or developmental disabilities by supporting or providing services and programs. For over 60 years, The Arc has been creating choices for individuals with disabilities and assisting them in navigating the often complex disability service system.  The Arc in Dickson County is a membership organization of people with disabilities, their family, friends, professionals, and concerned citizens.
